What is the CRTP Certification?
The Certified Red Team Professional (CRTP) is a completely hands-on certification provided by Altered Security. Unlike multiple-choice exams, this certification requires you to compromise a fully patched Active Directory (AD) infrastructure containing multiple Windows domains and forests.
To pass, you must demonstrate the ability to solve challenges using either standalone tools or Command and Control (C2) frameworks. The certification is highly regarded because it provides solutions (lab manuals and video walkthroughs) for all challenges, ensuring you can learn even if you get stuck during practice.
Preparation Strategy: Bootcamp vs. On-Demand
You generally have two options for preparation:
On-Demand Course: Self-paced learning.
Bootcamp: Includes live classes and direct access to instructors via Discord. This option is slightly more expensive but recommended if you prefer real-time interaction and immediate answers to technical questions.
The 3-Phase Study Plan
To maximize your chances of success, follow this structured approach:
The Theoretical Phase:
Go through all course materials first without touching the labs. Focus on understanding why a vulnerability exists and how to exploit it conceptually.
Note-Taking Strategy: Document the vulnerability, the attack method, required tools (and alternatives), and examples of both success and error messages.
The Guided Practical Phase:
Attempt the labs for the first time. If you get stuck, use the provided lab manuals and video walkthroughs. Use them as hints to check your thought process rather than just copying the solution.
The “Blind” Practical Phase:
Reset the labs and attempt to complete them a second time without any help. This confirms you truly understand the exploitation techniques and are ready for the exam environment.
